in Folge
Montreuil-Bellay is one of the typical fortifications of the Loire
Valley, founded in the middle ages to protect frontiers or fords - here
the ford over the river
Thouet, a tributary of the Loire. Foulques Nerra erected in the 11th
century a keep on the elevation over the river, surrounded by large
fortifications
which later housed one of the 32 fortified cities of the Anjou. The old fortified town is today the upper part of the city.
The current castle complex consists of a collegiate church and several
Renaissance buildings inside the smaller fortification line.
